Where divine justice will be served, and salvation through God's mercy
Hell is where justice will be served and accounts settled. Justice is not always achieved in this world; this balance is established in the hereafter. Allah's justice is perfect.
Islamic scholars have derived seven levels of hell from the Quran and hadith: Jahannam, Laza, Hutama, Sa'ir, Saqar, Jahim, and Hawiya. Each level is associated with different sins.
'Allah's mercy has preceded His wrath.' (Hadith) The Quran introduces Allah first with the attributes of Rahman and Rahim. Even as hellfire is described for disbelievers, the door of salvation through faith and repentance is always open.
Faith, sincere repentance, worship, and good character — these are the most fundamental factors that protect from hellfire. The Prophet said: 'Protect yourselves from hellfire even with half a date in charity.'
Zümer 53
Say: 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'

It is not fear of hell but a demand for justice — this is humanity's universal intuition. Every person says 'injustice will not go unpunished.' Islam's understanding of hell is the divine response to this deep intuition for justice. And God's mercy always comes first.
