Quran 2:43
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is an obligatory form of worship for Muslims whose wealth exceeds the nisab threshold and has been held for one full lunar year (Hawl).
Zakat purifies wealth and helps redistribute resources to those in need. It is both a spiritual act of gratitude and a cornerstone of Islamic social justice, reducing economic inequality.
The Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess before Zakat becomes obligatory. It equals 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver in value. If your total zakatable assets exceed this threshold, Zakat is due.
The Quran (9:60) specifies eight categories of Zakat recipients: the poor (fuqara), the needy (masakin), Zakat administrators, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing captives, debtors, those in the way of Allah, and stranded travelers.
