The first pillar of Islam is the declaration that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger. This testimony is the foundation of faith and the gateway to Islam.
The Shahada must be declared with sincere belief in the heart, spoken by the tongue, and acted upon in life. It is repeated in daily prayers, the call to prayer, and at significant moments.
الصلاة
أَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ
Praying five times a day is one of the most fundamental acts of worship for Muslims. The five prayers — Fajr (dawn), Dhuhr (midday), Asr (afternoon), Maghrib (sunset), and Isha (night) — represent the believer's direct connection with God.
Before prayer, ritual purification (wudu) is performed and one faces the qibla (Mecca). Prayer includes intention, opening takbir, recitation, bowing, and prostration. It can be performed anywhere that is clean.
الزكاة
وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ
Zakat is the obligation for every Muslim who owns wealth above the minimum threshold (nisab) to give a portion (typically 2.5%) to those in need. It purifies wealth and ensures social justice.
Zakat is distributed to eight categories including the poor, the needy, debtors, and travelers (At-Tawbah 60). Nisab thresholds vary by category — gold, silver, money, trade goods, and livestock each have their own calculation.
الصوم
كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ
Fasting from dawn to sunset during the month of Ramadan, abstaining from food, drink, and other invalidating acts. It trains the soul, deepens closeness to God, and cultivates gratitude.
Exemptions exist for the sick, travelers, pregnant/nursing women, and the elderly. Ramadan is marked by increased prayer, Quran recitation, and seeking Laylat al-Qadr in the last ten nights.
الحج
وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا
Every Muslim who is physically and financially able must perform Hajj to Mecca at least once in their lifetime. It takes place during the first two weeks of Dhul Hijjah and unites millions of Muslims.
Hajj rituals include: entering ihram (sacred state), circumambulating the Kaaba (tawaf), walking between Safa and Marwa, standing at Arafat, staying at Muzdalifa, stoning the pillars at Mina, and sacrifice. These revive the tradition of Prophet Ibrahim.
