Ishmael is the son of Abraham. When his father was commanded to sacrifice him, both willingly submitted to God's will. God sent a ram as ransom. Together they built the Kaaba in Mecca.
When Abraham told Ishmael of his vision, Ishmael replied: 'O my father, do what you are commanded — you will find me, God willing, among the patient.' This surrender is the purest expression of the meaning of Islam.
